Hi I'm Jay Allen welcome to my website sunbedban.com.

In February 2008, I was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma. I believe sunbeds played a major part in my diagnosis. I had no idea that a mole on your body can turn into something so deadly. A tan is simply not worth dying for. It was very scary going through the operations and waiting for the results, although I'm in the clear now over the next 5 years I have to get regular check ups every three months.

Ideally I'd like to see solariums banned in Australia and the world. However I know this will be a difficult battle to win, that's why I am advocating to increase public knowledge and awareness of the inherent risks of sunbeds. There's no place for sunbeds in a society that takes cancer prevention seriously.

For those who use solarium beds before the age of 30, the risk of skin cancer is increased by 75%. A more recent review suggested that the increased risk of melanoma could be as much as 98%. On July 30, 2009, the World Health Organisation elevated sun beds to the highest cancer risk category now classed as "carcinogenic to humans" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, matching asbestos, arsenic and cigarette smoke.

With a second chance at life, I'm determined to win my melanoma battle and do all I can, to save lives. I want to encourage everyone, especially young people to make informed decisions and know that sunbeds are not safe and they need to BAN them from their everyday lives.

I will continue with Clare Oliver's campaign, raising awareness of these deadly machines.
